2012 Athletic Department Awards Banquet to be held Tuesday, May 8th

The 2012 Athletic Department Awards Banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 8th at 8:00 PM in the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Dining Hall. The dessert banquet will honor the award recipients of the Carroll Rines Award for Sports Person of the Year, the Donald Ferrante Award for Most Improved Athlete and the John Dakin Award for Outstanding Contribuition to the Athletic Department.
Carroll Rines was the Sports Information Director at SMCC nearly 40 years. His dedication to the College was unmatched. The effort and energy he gave was volunteered, but his professionalism and dedication was worth millions. The Carroll Rines Award is given to the most deserving student-athlete who shows dedication and commitment to his/her team and the overall athletic department.
Donald Ferrante was an academically sound student at Southern Maine Technical College during the early 1970s. He was a member of the basketball and baseball teams. Ferrante tragically lost his life during the spring of his freshman year. To honor his legacy, SMCC awards the Donald Ferrante Award for Most Improved Athlete to the most deserving student-athlete who showed strong traits of determination, improvement and commitment to his/her teammates.
John Dakin served as the Director of Athletics, Men's Basketball Coach and Baseball Coach at the College for over 30 years. His dedication and contributions to the Department of Athletics were invaluable. The John Dakin Award is given to a non-athlete who has given of their time to the promotion and betterment of SMCC Athletics.
