SOUTH PORTLAND, ME - On Sunday Oct 10th at the SMCC Culinary Arts Center 42 attendees saw two more inductions into the SMCC Athletics Hall of Fame. Patrick Shaw (Men’s Soccer 2005) and the 1972 Men’s Basketball Team joined 11 members into the Hall of Fame.
The event began with a welcome from Kaylene Waindle from the SMCC Advancement office which gave a brief overview of the college’s direction and the part that athletics (past and present) have played a part of that direction. After Director of Athletics Matt Richards gave an overview of the Hall of Fame history, former SMCC Men’s Soccer coach Joel Bancroft began the induction ceremony with his recalling the play and character of Shaw.
“The all time stats speak for themselves as to why we are here for Patrick, stated Bancroft however it was his leadership, determination, and what he meant off the field as a student that really stick out in my mind when I think of him.”
Shaw ranks 1st all time at the college for career goals and assists. He was a three time all-conference player and a two time USCAA All-American. Once inducted, Shaw gave a brief speech thanking his parents, family, and friends.
The presenter of the 1972 Men’s Basketball Team that went 30-3 overall was Coach John Dakin (HOF Class of 2006). That win total ranks 1st all time for wins in a season and winning percentage within a season. That year the team also won the league championship. Dakin gave a very descriptive account of each player present with many humorous accolades of the season. Team member Ronald Landry came up to say a few words on behalf of the team which included how special it was for all of the members present to catch up with each other and to see their former coach.
Closing remarks of the day were presented by Seawolves Athletic Club President Anthony Inverso (SMCC ’91). He spoke with the excitement being created around the Athletics program and how a little support from attendees will help guarantee future student-athletes have the same opportunity available to them that the inductees, family and friends were able to enjoy.
