SMCC Men’s Soccer Program is Home to Five USCAA All-Americans
Seawolves earn two Athletic All-American and three Academic All-American honors
The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) hosted the Championship Banquet last night following the opening round games of the national men's soccer tournament. The banquet, held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina, honored student-athletes who earned All-America honors for their performance on the field and in the classroom. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team brought home five of those honors.
Junior forward Blais Whitney (Cornish, ME) and senior defender Nick Link (South Portland, ME) earned Athletic All-American honors for leading the Seawolves through an undefeated conference season. Whitney was the offensive leader on the team scoring 30 points during the regular season, including 13 goals and 4 assists.
This is the second All-American honor for Nick Link who controlled the defensive end of the pitch. During the regular season, in addition to stopping the opponents' scoring drives, he was able to score 3 goals of his own and tally 2 assists.
Three Seawolves represent SMCC on the Academic All-American list. Sophomores Kyle Ehlers (Ludlow, VT) and Truc Nguyen (Tam Ky, Vietnam) made the cut for the second year in a row. Also joining Ehlers and Nguyen is sophomore defender James Wurgler (Gray, ME). In order to be eligible for USCAA Academic All-American honors, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher.
