2011-2012 Softball Season Preview
YSCC regular season and tournament champions look to repeat
SMCC’s softball team is gearing up for another successful season. Practices are already taking place for the defending Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) regular season and tournament champions. Head Coach John Moody is heading into his sixth year and boasts four YSCC championships. Despite going 10-1 in conference play he’s looking to improve on last year’s 18-17 overall record stating “Even though we won the championship last year, I was not happy with our overall record. We gave away too many games that should have been wins for us.”
The Seawolves graduated seven players but return a number of key contributors. Returners include pitcher and centerfielder Casey Garrapy (Underhill, VT), first baseman and outfielder Jamie Moody (Cumberland Center, ME), catcher and second baseman Emily Boivin (Jay, ME) and catcher and outfielder Ashley Pulk (Sabattus, ME). Pulk, Garrapy, Moody and Boivin will lead the team as captains.
Coach Moody is very excited about this year’s recruiting class. Headlining the newcomers are pitcher Emily Bard (Fort Kent, ME), pitcher and shortstop Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH), Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME), second baseman and centerfielder Katelyn Benson (Westbrook, ME), third baseman Alyssa Pane (Lawrenceville, GA), catcher Brittany Harrison (South Portland, ME) and current SMCC soccer player Cady Gagnon (Biddeford, ME).
The YSCC added several new members that will surely be gunning for the Seawolves, but Coach Moody is up to the challenge. “We’re playing a very demanding schedule including a trip down to Myrtle Beach and I think that’s what we need to get to the next level of play…I look forward to working with this team, it should be a lot of fun.” The Seawolves open up the fall season on Wednesday, September 14 when they host conference rival Central Maine Community College.
