SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball program announced its 2017-18 schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 5 to include 28 regular season games, 18 of which will count as Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) contests.
In her second season as Head Coach, Katie Bergeron and the Lady SeaWolves will open with an exhibition game against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-opponent Thomas College on Oct. 25 before traveling to Auburn, Maine to compete in the Cam-Am Tournament where the SeaWolves came away with two wins a season ago.
SMCC will host the Naval Academy Preparatory School (Navy Prep) to begin November and then neighboring University of Southern Maine in another NCAA exhibition before traveling to Paul Smith's College to kickoff YSCC play on Friday, Nov. 10.
The SeaWolves will get St. Clair Community College at home ahead of an important three-game YSCC road slate to feature Unity College, Vermont Technical College (VTC), and the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA)—all teams SMCC has winning records with in the previous five seasons.
SMCC will look to avenge its semi-final exit of last year's YSCC Elite 8 Tournament when the SeaWolves host New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) inside the HUB Gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 30. SMCC caps its seven-game conference stretch at both the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) and Great Bay Community College (GBCC), and at home facing Hampshire College—three teams SMCC has a combined 18-2 record in the previous five seasons.
The Lady SeaWolves will welcome Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in a non-conference showdown on Saturday, Nov. 9 before reigning United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Champions Central Maine Community College (CMCC) come to town when the "best small college basketball rivalry in Maine" continues on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
SMCC will play two non-conference teams in Navy Prep and the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) out of the break afore a three-game YSCC home stand. It will be Berkeley College and CCRI again before UMA, Hampshire, GBCC, and NHTI—all part two of the season home and away split.
The SeaWolves will match up against the College of St. Joseph (V.T.), now a non-conference opponent, as they get ready for CMCC, this time in Auburn, Maine on Wednesday, Feb. 7. SMCC will round out its regular season at home on Senior Day against VTC on Saturday, Feb. 10, likely to determine the final seeding of the YSCC Elite 8 Tournament to be held in Concord, N.H. beginning Thursday, Feb. 15.
