SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team was defeated 74-61 by the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School in a non-conference game at the HUB on Saturday, Nov. 3.
The Midshipmen starters combined for 34 first-half points to lead the home team by eight going into the break. Sophomore Gregory Trinidad (Lawrence, Mass.) was effective with his 18 minutes in the first, draining two from beyond the arc on his way to 10 points. Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) collected nine rebounds and eight points in first half action.
The SeaWolves exceeded their point total in the second half by nine but couldn’t handle Navy Prep’s Michael Bradley who carried his team for 19 points, flushing 4-5 from three in all 20 minutes of action. Sophomore Sean Bowering (Englewood, Colo.) made a three to even the score at 50-50 with 8:14 left. The Midshipmen would go on an 11-3 run to put it out of reach and hand SMCC its first loss of the season—now 3-1 on the season. The result pushes the Midshipmen to 3-1 overall.
Navy Prep’s Bradley led all scorers in the game with 28, making 11-19 from the field. Trinidad finished with 14 points and Martin 12 points and 12 rebounds—his second double-double in the early stages of the season.
