SMCC Women Take Down Machias at the Buzzer
The SMCC women's basketball team beat University of Maine-Machias this afternoon 62-60 on a buzzer-beating shot by freshman Katelyn Benson (Westbrook, ME). The two teams matched up well and exchanged leads numerous times throughout the game.
Machias tied the game 60-60 by hitting the first of two free throw attempts with 14 seconds remaining on the clock. SMCC rebounded the second attempt and called timeout with the game tied and 10 seconds remaining. The Seawolves maintained composure and Benson was able to get a shot off as time expired.
Freshman center Marissa Welch (Livermore, ME) finished strong inside with 24 points and 18 rebounds while Benson and Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) controlled the perimeter with 15 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore point guard Hanna Lyons (Scarborough, ME) contributed a strong performance with 2 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
The Seawolves improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in Yankee Small College Conference play. The women are in action again on Thursday, December 1 when they travel to NHTI for a 6:00pm start.
