Seawolves, Saints Split to Wrap up Regular Season
Rutland, VT - The Lady Seawolves wrapped up their regular season on the road yesterday afternoon with a double header against YSCC foe St. Joe's College (VT). When the two teams met in the fall the Seawolves were swept by the Saints but this meeting would be a different story as the Seawolves took game one by a convincing 7-2 score. The Saints managed a six run second inning in game two to pull away from the Seawolves and eventually walk away with the 12-4 triumph.
Despite being down their starting shortstop and having people playing in unfamiliar positions the Seawolves defense was on point in game one giving up only six singles to the Saints. SMCC pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH) jumpstarted the Seawolves' offense with a double her first time at the plate and first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) brought her home on an RBI single to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead after one inning. The second inning started with back to back singles by catcher Amber Jones (Deer Isle, ME) and centerfielder Erica Brochu (Lewiston, ME) and then a second double by Lewis brought Jones in and gave the Seawolves a 2-0 advantage after two innings.
In the top of the third with one out and a runner at first, third baseman Shannon Blanchard (Windsor, ME) smacked a double to right field but the end result was a tag out at third by the Saints and an ankle injury to Gilio. Now looking at two outs it appeared that the Saints may hold the Seawolves scoreless in third but Jones didn't think so as she crushed a triple to right field bringing Blanchard around and padding the SMCC lead. The Seawolves weren't done yet as Jones' hit was followed up by a walk for Brochu and then with two runners in place newcomer Aime Worcester (Naples, ME) nailed a two RBI triple, causing the dugout to erupt. Worcester proceeded to score on a third double from Lewis, allowing the Seawolves to post four runs and take a 6-0 lead. The Saints came away with a run in both the third and fifth but it wasn't enough to overcome the Seawolves lead as SMCC grabbed the 7-2 victory.
Due to the lack of subs in game two the Seawolves were forced to play with eight healthy bodies and an injured Gilio, who toughed it out for five painful innings. Trailing 2-1 after one inning the Seawolves were able to rally and regain the lead putting up three runs in the second off a three RBI double by second baseman Zoey Proctor (Rockland, ME). However, the bottom of the second inning would be the demise of the Seawolves as the Saints managed seven solid hits, two stolen bases and six runs to pull away with what appeared to be an insurmountable four run lead, 8-4. The Seawolves were held scoreless for the remainder of the game as the Saints proceeded to tack on two in more in the third and two in the fifth to take the game 12-4 in five innings. Left fielder Danielle Mobbs (Richmond, VT) led the Seawolves offense in game two going 2-2 at the plate with a double, a single and a walk.
The Seawolves wrap up regular season 11-12 overall and 5-7 in conference play. The Seawolves will be off all week before they take the field again at NHTI on Saturday for the YSCC playoffs. It looks as though the Seawolves will most likely be facing the Saints in round one of playoff action, potentially giving them an opportunity to avenge yesterday's loss.
