Women’s Basketball Wins a Close One on the Road
The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team beat University of Maine-Augusta (UMA) this evening 64-62. UMA got a quick jump on SMCC by opening up the game with a 20-8 lead. The Seawolves worked their way back into the game and went into halftime up 31-29. The second half was a tough battle, but the Seawolves were able to hang onto the lead largely due to their effort on the defensive end.
Freshman Marissa Welch (Livermore, ME) led the Seawolves with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Katelyn Benson (Westbrook, ME) contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Seawolves' bench came through big with leading rebounder Kristal Saavedra (Portland, ME) pulling down 12 rebounds and 2 steals.
Sophomore guards and team captains Hanna Lyons (Scarborough, ME) and Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) continue to provide SMCC with the leadership needed to win games. Lyons handled the point guard responsibilities and contributed 10 points and 8 boards. Palmieri put up 12 points including 3 free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead.
With the win, the Seawolves advance to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Yankee Small College Conference play. The women are in action again on Friday, November 18 at 5:30pm when they take on Hampshire College.
