Lady Seawolves Lose Close One at CM
Auburn - Tonight looked like it may have been the night for the Lady Seawolves to snap the CMCC Mustangs 46 game conference win streak as they jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and maintained that lead for the majority of the game. However, after SMCC's defensive specialist Zyrah Giustra (New Sharon, ME) left the game due to injury, the Seawolves were to find an answer for CM's Gabby Foy, who knocked down 17 of her 24 points in the second half, and led her team to 66-62 victory.

The Seawolves were on top by 12 points with 8:06 remaining in the first but the Mustangs chipped away and closed the gap to just three at the half, 29-26. In second half action Foy hit a big three to put the Mustangs up by five, their largest lead of the game, with 4:28 remaining. A back and forth game ensued and with less than a minute remaining the Seawolves, now trailing 63-59, called a play for freshman shooting guard Caitlin King (Sebago, ME), executed to perfection, King connected on her third three of the evening to bring SMCC to within one. The Seawolves proceeded to pick up another stop on defense but a costly turnover with under 20 seconds to play gave the Mustangs the ball back. An immediate foul by the Seawolves sent Lexi Larson to the free throw line, where she connected on one of two attempts, putting CMCC up two. SMCC's attempt to tie the game was blocked by Mustangs' center Laura Soohey and a foul in the rebounding action sent Soohey to line for two free throws. Soohey iced both attempts from the charity stripe to solidify the win at 66-62.
Leading the way for the Lady Seawolves was King with 17 points. Forwards' Jennifer Genthner (Newcastle, ME) and Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) netted eight and seven respectively, combined for five blocks, and each grabbed 10 boards. Giustra chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds and Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and had two blocks.
The Seawolves slipped to 8-5 overall and 6-2 in conference after tonight's loss. They will close out the first semester with a game at the Community College of Rhode Island on Wednesday the 17th at 6pm.
