Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Spring 2026
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Associate Dean of Athletics and Engagement Ethan Wells published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2026 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.

- Total student-athletes: 125 (6 more than spring 2025)
- Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.82
- Spring 2026-Fall 2026 USCAA retention rate: 80.49%
- Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 65 (52% of total student-athletes)
- Student-athletes earning a 3.5 GPA or better: 37
- USCAA Academic All-Americans: 14 (3.5 GPA or better with 24+ credits)
- Best team GPA: softball (3.61)
- 100% retention rates: softball, baseball
- Leslie Barteaux Scholar Athletes of the Year (best GPAs with 36+ credits)

- Yana Montell (Women’s Volleyball): 3.95
- Sean Bosia (Men’s Basketball): 3.90
In strategic review of the data Wells stated, “SMCC student-athletes continued to raise the standard, not only through their success in competition, but in the classroom as well. Their academic achievements reflect the discipline and accountability that are pillars to our culture as Seawolves. Combined with the most successful seasons of athletic achievement in department history, this year was a powerful example of what our community can accomplish together.”
