Southern Maine Community College Baseline Neurocognitive Concussion Testing
It is the policy of Southern Maine Community College Athletic Training and the USCAA that all incoming student-athletes perform a baseline neurocognitive examination. This information will be used in the event that the student-athlete suffers a head injury and is being evaluated for a concussion. If a student-athlete is diagnosed with a concussion, then they will not be allowed to begin a return to play protocol until they are symptom free and have returned to their baseline examinations consisting of a battery of neurocognitive testing, neuropsychological testing, balance testing and physical examination.
SMCC has chosen to utilize imPACT Testing as part of our baseline testing protocol. This tool will be one part that is used, along with the SCAT3 and clinical evaluations, when determining when a student-athlete is ready to return to the field of play and the classroom.
Therefore, SMCC is requiring that each incoming student-athlete perform a baseline imPACT exam. We are asking that all incoming student-athletes perform this test before coming to campus.
The instructions for logging on can be found below. Please give yourself 40 minutes of uninterrupted time to perform this test. Find a quiet room that is free from distractions (i.e. Library, Study Hall or other room with a closed door and no noise).
Instructions for Student-Athletes Logging on to imPACT to Take a Baseline TestSystem Requirements: Concussion baseline testing should be done on a computer with internet access (Google Chrome seems to work the best) and an external mouse for most accurate results. You will need to disable your pop-up blocker.
