GROTON, Conn. — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team opened the 2026 calendar year with a 73-67 road win over UCONN Avery Point on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Seawolves move to 9-5 overall and 3-5 in YSCC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC wasted no time setting the tone, opening the game on a 7-0 run behind a jumper from Ellis Macea (Lawrence, Mass.) and a three-pointer from Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.). Chance Mercier (Ellsworth, Maine) added back-to-back scores as the Seawolves jumped ahead early and never trailed in the first half.
SMCC outscored the UCOON Avery Point 39–29 in the first 20 minutes. A late scoring burst featuring a Mugisha triple and a fast break finish from Bosia helped the Seawolves carry the 10-point lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Bosia buried another three and Macea hit a tough midrange jumper to push the lead to 17. The late push from UCONN Avery Point was not enough as the Seawolves kept secured a layup from Macea with 30 seconds left and a free throw from Sam DeWitt (Hudson, N.H.) to seal the win.
