Three Decades in the Making: Seawolves Claim 12th Straight Win
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team returned home Saturday afternoon and defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent 74-71. This marks the 12th straight win for the SeaWolves, making it the longest win streak in over 30 years. The last time this was accomplished was in the 1993-94 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Chance Mercier (Ellsworth, Maine) opened the scoring for the SeaWolves with a field goal. A few possessions later, Sam DeWitt (Hudson, N.H.) knocked down a 3-pointer as SMCC and Fort Kent traded baskets early.
Midway through the first half, Mercier connected on a 3-pointer and followed with another field goal. Nathan Mugisha (Rwanda, East Africa) added to the scoring with a dunk as SMCC carried a 34-30 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, DeWitt scored to open the second half, and Ellis Macea (Lawrence, Mass.) finished back-to-back layups to keep the SeaWolves rolling. The teams continued to go back and forth through the opening stretch of the second half.
Mercier continued to attack the basket and pushed past the 15-point mark. SMCC's offense slowed late in the game until Jace Bessey (Jay, Maine) hit a key 3-pointer to keep the SeaWolves within reach.
With SMCC trailing late, Mugisha delivered in the closing minutes with a layup followed by a block as the SeaWolves regained the lead. Mugisha scored SMCC's final points with a layup to seal the victory.

SMCC won the rebounding battle 43-28 and shot 47.9% from the field (34 of 71). The SeaWolves went 5 of 16 from 3-point range (31.3%).
UP NEXT
The SeaWolves (20-5, 9-5) return to the HUB on Wednesday at 8 p.m. to host Central Maine Community College in a rivalry matchup. The game will also serve as a Spirit Week event, Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, and Student Athlete Appreciation Night. Fans are encouraged to wear navy blue or white.
