Next Up: Ian Regan Named Head Coach of SMCC Men's Basketball
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Southern Maine Community College Athletics has announced the appointment of Ian Regan as Head Men's Basketball Coach, becoming the 12th head coach in program history.
A former Seawolves student-athlete, team captain, national champion, and assistant coach, Regan assumes leadership of the program following the coaching retirement of longtime head coach Matt Richards. His appointment continues a tradition of developing leadership from within while preserving the culture that has defined one of the region's most successful small-college basketball programs.
“I couldn't be more proud to announce Ian as the program’s next head coach,” said Associate Dean of Athletics & Engagement Ethan Wells. “As a former student-athlete and member of the coaching staff, Ian embodies everything we value in our department. As credit to Coach Richards, Ian understands the standard of excellence that has defined Seawolves basketball for decades and is passionate, driven, and deeply committed to the success of our student-athletes. As I looked ahead to the future of the program, one thing became increasingly clear—the right person was already a part of our family. I have every confidence that Ian will build on traditions and guide the program into its next chapter.”
Regan returns to the position after serving three seasons as an assistant coach under Richards, helping guide the Seawolves to a 54-33 overall record during that span. The program captured the 2026 Yankee Small College Conference Championship while earning two United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament appearances.
His connection to Seawolves Basketball extends well beyond the sidelines.
As a student-athlete from 2018-22, Regan appeared in 82 career games and served as team captain for two seasons. He helped lead SMCC to three consecutive USCAA National Tournament appearances, culminating in the program's first-ever team national championship in 2022. During his playing career, Regan earned two Yankee Small College Conference All-Conference selections, was named a USCAA All-American in 2022, and twice received USCAA Academic All-American honors.
“It is an honor to be named the next head coach of a program that has played such an important role in shaping who I am today,” said Regan. “SMCC gave me the opportunity to live out my dream of being a collegiate student-athlete and later become a member of the coaching staff. I’m deeply grateful to Coach Richards and Ethan Wells for their confidence and trust in me to continue the standard, culture, and legacy of this program. I’m excited to build upon the foundation Coach Richards established and thankful for everything he has meant to me as a coach, mentor, and friend.”
Regan becomes the first former SMCC men's basketball player to return and lead the program as head coach in the modern era, inheriting a tradition that includes six Yankee Small College Conference championships and the 2022 USCAA Division II National Championship.
Regan now begins the next chapter of a program he has helped shape as a student-athlete and assistant coach, carrying forward the tradition and culture that have defined Seawolves Basketball for generations.
