Concord, NH. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team traveled to New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) for the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament. The Seawolves started the day out by beating Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) in the semi-final round by a score 8-4. SMCC started out slow down 4-1 until their bats got going in 4th and 5th innings where they put up a combined 7 runs leading themselves to victory.
With the win, SMCC advanced to the championship game against rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC). The Seawolves continued to have the hot bat as they scored in 5 different innings. The Mustangs didn't give up as they put together a run late to tie it up in the top of the 6th innings. SMCC held tough and was able to put up 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning on CMCC and was able to pull out an 11-9 victory and become the YSCC tournament champions.
In the semi-final game against EMCC, the Seawolves were led by sophomore first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) who went 3 for 4 at the plate while contributing 2 RBI's and scoring a run. Freshman pitcher Lindsey Howell (Limington, ME) went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and a scored run. Howell who only gave up 4 earned runs and had 6 strikeouts, earned her first win of the day.
In the championship game VS. CMCC, SMCC was led by sophomore outfielder Yaritza Tejada (Chelsea, MA) who went 3 for 4 at the plate. Tejada also had an RBI, scored a run, and stole a base. Freshman pitcher Lindsey Howell (Limington, ME), sophomore first basemanKathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME), freshman outfielder Danielle Mobbs (Richmond, VT) and freshman third baseman Kathryn Chicoine (Athol, MA) each contributed 2 hits and had a combined 7 runs scored. Earning her second win of the day and tournament Most Valuable Player was Lindsey Howell (Limington, ME). Earning the honors for Most Outstanding Defensive Player was sophomore first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME).
With the 2 victories today, SMCC finishes their season with a 9-17 overall record and the bragging rights of being the 2013 Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Champions.
