Patchogue, NY - This weekend the Lady Seawolves traveled to New York to take on USCAA member, Briarcliffe College in a double header. The Seawolves pulled out the 4-3 triumph in the first of the two matches but the Lady Bulldogs of Briarcliffe rallied in the second contest coming away with an 8-0 victory over the Seawolves.
In game one, shortstop Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) jumpstarted the Lady Seawolves' offense when she chalked up a hit to get on base in the first inning. Allards' hit was followed by a hit from pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH), advancing Allard and putting herself on base. Allard put the Seawolves on the board when she scored on a Briarcliffe error giving the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage. Next up to bat was first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) who hit a ground out that brought Lewis home and gave the Seawolves a two run edge. In the third inning the Lady Seawolves struck again when a Gilio double scored catcher Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME).
The score remained 3-0 in favor of SMCC until the fifth inning when Briarcliffe rattled off three runs, thanks in part to a two RBI triple from Castillo. With the score knotted at three runs apiece at the end of the seventh, the teams entered an international tie breaker in which each team starts the inning with a runner on second base. Lewis started on second for the Seawolves, Trafton managed to bunt her to third and the Gilio hit a sacrifice fly to score Lewis and put SMCC back own the lead. The Seawolves held off the Lady Bulldogs who left three runners stranded on base at the end of the inning and the Lady Seawolves pulled off the 4-3 win.
The Lady Seawolves did not fair as well in game two of the double header. For five innings the Lady Seawolves couldn't get enough consecutive hits to put runs on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the Briarcliffe bats lit up putting four runs on the board in the first inning then going on to tack on one more in the second, two in the third inning and one in the fourth before mercy ruling the Seawolves after five innings by a score of 8-0.
After today the Lady Seawolves are sporting a 1-7 overall record. They will return to action Saturday March 29th at home against CCRI at noon and 1:30pm.
