South Portland - This morning's snow covered softball field did not look promising for playing today's double header but the women's team pitched in and shoveled the field this morning, allowing them to get their games in. The Lady Seawolves picked up two wins this afternoon against the Lady Knights of Northern Essex Community College. Both games were completed in four innings of play. The first ended with a 13-2 Seawolves victory and the second game finished at 15-3.
In the opening game the Lady Seawolves racked up ten hits in the second inning including grand slam by first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) and a three RBI triple by short stop Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) to put the Seawolves on top 13-0 after two innings of play. Northern Essex found some offense in the fourth inning, hitting two consecutive singles, the hits partnered with a handful of errors by the Lady Seawolves resulted in two Lady Knights runs. But the offensive rally by Northern Essex wasn't enough as the Seawolves rolled to a 13-2 victory. For the game pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH) struck out seven of the seventeen batters she faced and batters Danielle Mobbs (Richmond, VT), Taylor Clapp (Richmond, ME) and Gilio all batted 1.000.
In game two the Seawolves quickly jumped into their offense when leadoff batter Allard hit a double, was advanced by a Lewis single and the two were brought home by a two RBI single from Gilio. The Seawolves put five runs on the board in the first but again inning number two was where they really ramped it up. After a slight rally by the Lady Knights in the top of the second the Lady Seawolves entered the dugout with only a two run advantage, 5-3. The Seawolves were able to rattle off eight runs in the second inning before the Lady Knights got the first out. The Seawolves were able to put up two more runs before the games end, finishing the contest 15-3. Centerfielder Michela Desjardins (Fort Kent, ME) and Lewis both went three for three at the plate in game two and each had an RBI triple. Desjardins ended with three RBIs and Lewis with two.
These two victories improve the Lady Seawolves overall record to 10-14 while sporting a 3-4 conference record. They will be back on the field on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week. Tomorrow they will face Central Maine Commuinity College at home in double header beginning at 3:30pm.
