South Portland - Today the Lady Seawolves played their final home games of the 2014-15 season against the Lady Bulldogs of Dean College. Six of the thirteen players on the SMCC roster were participating in their senior game and wanted to be sure they protected their home field in their last home outing. The Seawolves pulled out a close fought game one by a score of 7-5 and cruised to an 11-3 triumph in game two.
In game one Dean struck immediately to take a one run advantage but the Seawolves fired back when pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH) and shortstop Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) crossed the plate on a long single by first baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) to give the Seawolves the upper hand. SMCC's catcher, Amber Jones (Deer Isle, ME), led off in the second inning with a double and proceeded to score, giving the Seawolves a 3-1 lead.
Both teams stayed quiet in the third but Dean's pitcher Tess Fitzmaurice nailed a long bomb to left field and eventually crossed the plate to bring the Bulldogs back to within one. Again the Seawolves had the answer, this time in the form of runs by Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME) and Allard to take their largest lead of the game, 5-2. The Seawolves brought in two more runs in the fifth to take a five run lead but the Bulldogs would not go away, scoring three in the sixth to close the gap back to two. The Seawolves were able to ward off the Bulldogs in the seventh thanks to a heads up play by Lewis, who caught an infield popup and then doubled off the runner at first base.
In game two the teams were tied 1-1 until the bottom of the third inning when a bomb sent to the outfield by leftfielder Danielle Mobbs (Richmond, VT) drove in Gilio and spurred six run scoring frenzy to give SMCC a 7-1 edge. SMCC was able to score two runs in both the fourth and fifth to get the 11-3 win in five innings.
The Seawolves have now improved to 10-11 overall and will finish up their regular season schedule tomorrow on the road at the College of St. Joe's in VT at 1 and 3pm.
