In game one softball newcomer Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) drilled her first career double in the fifth to put two runners in scoring position. Leftfielder Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, ME) knocked in Angela Neff (Barrington, RI) on an RBI to pull the Seawolves to within two, 3-1. The Owls tacked on two runs in the in the sixth to expand the lead back to three and held the Seawolves scoreless, taking a 5-2 advantage into the seventh. UMPI managed to chalk up three runs in the seventh and in a final attempt by the Seawolves resulted in runs by Rachel Cutler (North Yarmouth, ME) and Veino to bring SMCC back to within four but they were unable to generate any further offense, dropping the game 8-4.
In the second outing the Seawolves kept the game close, trailing only 3-1 entering the sixth, but then the Owls cranked up the offense and scored six runs to balloon the lead to 9-1. The Seawolves had one batter, Sarah Murphy (Scarborough, ME), cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth. An eight run seventh inning by UMPI put the Seawolves in a 15 run hole and despite four runs from SMCC, thanks to a two RBI single from Veino, the Seawolves fell 17-6.
The Seawolves fall to 2-10 on the season after this afternoon's games. They will be on the road tomorrow for a double header at Massasoit at 1 & 3pm.
