South Portland - Yesterday the Lady Seawolves softball team hosted the College of St. Joseph's (VT) for an afternoon double header. The Saints put on a dominating performance as they overcame SMCC 19-3 in game one and 22-3 in game two.
The Lady Seawolves kept the game within reach for for the first two innings, trailing only 5-1 after Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, ME) scored in the second. A wild pitch by the Seawolves coupled with two stolen bases by the Saints resulted in three CSJ runs and expanded the lead to 8-1. The Saints tacked on two more in the fourth but this time SMCC answered with two runs of their own, one by Jennifer Genthner (Newcastle, ME) who was batted in by Grace Davis (Belfast, ME) and the other by Davis who was hit home by Rioux. However the Saints poured it on in the fifth, scoring nine runs and securing the 19-3 victory. Seawolves' pitcher Lindsay Marston (Rumford, ME) had a tough outing on the mound, walking seven Saints' batters which resulted in six runs.
In game two the hot hitting Saints continued to roll, scoring 13 runs in the first two innings and then chalking up four homeruns in the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding 22-3 win. The only offensive action for the Seawolves came in the third inning when Marston reached first on an error and then Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME) and Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, ME) each got walked to load the bases. Micheala Willwerth (South Portland, ME) then stepped up to the plate and drilled a three RBI double to put the Seawolves in the score books.
The Lady Seawolves (7-18, 5-10 YSCC) will see CSJ again for another double header this afternoon.
