Franklin, MA - In a closely fought softball game, that took three extra innings to complete, the Bulldogs of Dean College squeaked out a 9-8 win over the Lady Seawolves.
The Lady Seawolves were first to find their way onto the scoreboard when Sarah Murphy (Scarborough, ME) knocked in Maddie Wade (Brunswick, ME) in the second inning. The Bulldogs responded with three runs in the third which were the result of passed balls and errors by SMCC. Trailing 3-1 in the fourth Murphy cut the lead to a sole run when she was batted in by first baseman Jennifer Genthner (Newcastle, ME). The fifth inning was a big one for both teams as the Seawolves put up four runs, thanks in part to a three run in-the-park homerun by Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME), and the Bulldogs managed three to knot the game at six apiece going into the sixth.
Both teams cranked up the defense in the final two innings, neither giving up a run and sending the game into extra innings. In each extra inning a runner starts on second base, for the Seawolves Nielsen was that runner and she scored easily after a Murphy bunt and a Genthner single. The Bulldogs fired right back with a run by Brown and again the game was deadlocked. After a scoreless ninth by both teams the Seawolves managed to load the bases in the top of the tenth and then Murphy batted in catcher Rachel Cutler (North Yarmouth, ME) to regain the lead. Dean would finally put the game to rest in bottom of the tenth when they scored two runs to walk away with the 9-8 victory.
SM's Lindsay Marston (Rumford, ME) pitched the entire game for the Seawolves, striking out nine of the 49 batters she faced.
The Seawolves will get a much deserved rest, not playing again until Friday when they host NHTI for a 4pm start.
