SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—This new-look softball team will return just three players from last year’s squad in Samantha Rioux (Lewiston, Maine), Danielle Goodwin (South Berwick, Maine), and Lindsay Marston (Rumford, Maine). First-year Head Coach Ray Magnant will look to improve on the team’s 4-23 overall record a season ago when the Lady SeaWolves hit .285 as a team on their way to scoring 106 runs.
Marston will return to the mound for SMCC after leading the team in innings-pitched in 2016. The right-hander made 15 appearances, collected two wins, and struck out 35 spanning 72.2 innings last season.
The Lady SeaWolves are two years removed from winning five consecutive Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championships, and Coach Magnant is building to bring the title back to South Portland. Playing to a 2-4 record this 2016 fall season, SMCC has made key additions to the spring roster that offer more depth in the infield and pitching rotation.
The 2017 squad will feature first-year infielders Chantel Lane (Millinocket, Maine), named PVC 1st Team All-Conference at Schenck High School, Kahli Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.), named Defensive Player of the Year at Manchester Central High School, and Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine), three-year SMAA 1st Team All-Conference selection.
“The outlook for this spring season is very bright! This spring team has a great attitude, strong work ethic, and outstanding team chemistry. I’m excited about our potential and can’t wait to test ourselves against solid competition. The strengths of this squad is in pitching and offensive production. Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine), Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.), and Marston will be effective in the rotation showing lots of movement—they should be able to keep us in every game. New comers Emma Burns (Berwick, Maine), Elle Burbank (Bethel, Maine), Abdul, and Guimond will help us manufacture runs and add power to the middle of the line-up.”
This spring season the Lady SeaWolves will play a 27-game slate, seven home dates, and 11 conference games against YSCC-opponents that include College of St. Joseph (VT), New Hampshire Technical College (NHTI), and Central Maine Community College. SMCC will round out its 2017 campaign when they compete in the YSCC Championship Tournament at NHTI on Saturday, May 6.
