DUBOIS, PA. — With both teams facing elimination, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball kept its season alive on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA), 7-4, at the USCAA Small College World Series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UMA opened the scoring in the top of the third when Shanna Parsons reached on an error while collecting an RBI for driving in Madilyn Cote. The Seawolves responded in the bottom of the third with a five-run outburst to seize control of the game.
Ariana Cross (Orrington, Maine) delivered a two-run single during the inning, while Sloan Scotvold (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) added an RBI single as SMCC capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues by UMA.
The Moose answered with a run in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit, but SMCC responded in the bottom half of the frame. Ella Voth (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) ripped a single to center scoring Hayley Cowan (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) before Drea Rideout (Yarmouth, Maine) grounded over to third to bring home Voth and extend the lead to 7-2.
UMA threatened late with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Scotvold closed the door to secure the elimination-game victory and send the Seawolves into the next round of the tournament.
