AUGUSTA, Maine — In a fast-paced, high-offense road matchup, the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team put four players in double figures but fell 83–78 to the University of Maine–Augusta on Wednesday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC opened the night hitting jumpers and getting downhill early—Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) and Kylie Young (Westbrook, Maine) combined for 12 first-quarter points as the Seawolves took a 20–19 lead after one.
UMaine-Augusta responded with a strong second quarter, fueled by perimeter shooting from Bella Petrocci, who knocked down six threes on the night. The Moose outscored SMCC 20–13 in the frame, sending the Seawolves into halftime trailing 39–33.
The third quarter was the turning point. Reed caught fire—hitting pull-up jumpers, attacking gaps, and assisting teammates in transition—while Young crashed the glass and dished out eight assists. First-year guard Mckenna Johnson (Gardiner, Maine) came off the bench and knocked down two threes in the period, helping the Seawolves take a 56–55 lead into the fourth.
But Petrocci continued her standout night for UMA, and the Moose opened the final quarter on a 10–2 run. SMCC battled back behind finishes from Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) and Skyler Tinker (Trescott Twp., Maine), and the Seawolves cut it to a one-possession game in the final minute. However, late free throws from the Moose sealed the five-point margin.
