TROY, N.Y. — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team collected a win on the road, holding Hudson Valley Community College to 24.1% shooting in a 55–35 non-conference win at McDonough Sports Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hudson Valley struck first, but SMCC settled in as sophomore forward Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.) finished inside to even the score, and first-year guard Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) sparked an early run with a pair of transition buckets. SMCC closed the quarter with second-chance scoring from Skyler Tinker (Trescott Twp., Maine) and carried a 14–9 lead after one.
The Seawolves extended their lead in the second quarter. Reed scored from all three levels, including a three and multiple finishes at the rim, while SMCC converted defensive stops into points. A jumper from Julissa McBarron (Springvale, Maine) and another Reed layup helped push the margin to double digits, and SMCC went into halftime up 29–14 after limiting Hudson Valley to just five points in the quarter.
SMCC's defense remained a strong point coming out of the break. The Seawolves controlled the boards and continued to turn stops into offense. First-year guard Mckenna Johnson (Gardiner, Maine) buried a three midway through the third and added a transition finish late in the quarter as SMCC stretched the lead to 38–19 entering the fourth.
Hudson Valley found some rhythm in the final frame, but SMCC answered every push. Mia Gumaa (Manchester, N.H.) scored early in the quarter, Kylie Young (Westbrook, Maine) finished a pair of layups, and Reed capped the night with a late three as the Seawolves maintained control the rest of the way to secure the 20-point road win.
