SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team pulled away from Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), earning a 74-49 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon at The HUB.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC and CCRI traded stops early. The Seawolves got on the board with a finish from sophomore forward Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.), and first-year guard Mckenna Johnson (Gardiner, Maine) added a pair of strong takes to help SMCC gain momentum. After the teams battled to an 8–8 tie midway through the quarter, Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) sparked a late push with multiple steals and transition finishes as SMCC took a 16–12 lead after one.
The Seawolves steadily built the margin in the second quarter. Skyler Tinker (Trescott Twp., Maine) provided energy off the bench by getting to the line and creating extra possessions, while Trueman and Darby Flanagan (Dresden, Maine) controlled the paint. SMCC continued to force turnovers and closed the half with a layup from Tinker in the final seconds to carry a 30-21 advantage into the break.
SMCC delivered its decisive stretch in the third. Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) knocked down back-to-back threes to ignite the run, and Reed followed with a scoring burst of her own - hitting a pair of triples, finishing at the rim, and converting at the line during a 16-point quarter that pushed the lead to 50-33 entering the fourth.
In the final period, the Seawolves closed the door behind a flurry of stops and timely perimeter shooting. Reed continued to make plays at both ends, while first-year guard Mia Gumaa (Manchester, N.H.) caught fire—connecting on multiple threes and a pull-up jumper as SMCC stretched the lead past 20. Taylor Renna (Pembroke, N.H.) capped the surge with a late three, and SMCC closed out the 25-point win.
