SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team secured a 61–56 conference victory over the University of Maine–Augusta on Tuesday night at The HUB.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SMCC set the tone early behind perimeter shooting by sophomore guard Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) knocked down three first-quarter triples, while freshman guard Julia Reed (Gorham, Maine) facilitated the offense as the Seawolves built a 20–17 lead after one.
The Seawolves extended their advantage in the second. Mullen continued to connect from deep, freshman point guard Julissa McBarron (Springvale, Maine) provided a spark off the bench, and freshman guard Abby Roy (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) capped the half with a corner three in the final seconds to give SMCC a 39–31 edge at the break.
UMaine–Augusta responded in the third, using second-chance opportunities to chip away and briefly pull within one. SMCC weathered the stretch behind rebounding from sophomore forward Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.) and free throws from McBarron, carrying a 41–40 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter featured multiple lead changes before SMCC closed it out. Reed buried a three midway through the period while freshman center Darby Flanagan (Dresden, Maine) converted a late jumper to put SMCC ahead for good. Reed sealed the game at the line in the final seconds as the Seawolves secured the second place rank in the YSCC.
