SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced the hiring of David Walsh as the next Head Baseball Coach effective immediately.
Hired as an Assistant Coach to begin the fall, Walsh will move over to the third-base line to take the helm following Coach Jordan Yanni’s resignation earlier this month.
A Massachusetts native, Walsh graduated from Husson University in 2007 with a degree in Sport Management. He played and worked four seasons under long-time coach John Winkin and is a product of his philosophy. Winkin won 1,043 games at the collegiate level and was elected to the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Following his playing career, Walsh returned to his alma mater to be named Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Fenway High School (Boston, Mass.). There he collected 63 wins, qualified for five MIAA State Tournaments, and collected two Coach of the Year awards in his six-year term, 2011-17.
Most recently, Walsh served as a Coach and Player Developer at Sluggers Academy (Medfield, Mass.), Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Pine Major College (Brookline, Mass.), and Head Baseball Manager and Recruiting Coordinator for the Bancroft Bandits (Bancroft, Iowa).
Former Head Coach Jordan Yanni expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, “These two and a half seasons have been an amazing ride. Thank you to the SMCC Athletics Department for all of its support and I wish the program continued success.”
Walsh comments on his first head collegiate appointment, “I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity before me and all that SMCC has to offer. I’m ready to get the ball rolling here on many levels and propel this program to new heights.”
Walsh will take over a SeaWolves squad that owns a 10-4 overall record this fall.
