SeaWolves Survive And Advance, Bury Moose 84-60

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The #2-seeded Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team took down the #7 Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 84-60 in the quarter final round of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) playoff tournament on Sunday, Feb. 17.

The SeaWolves attempted a season-high 46 three-pointers, connecting for 26.1 percent from long range. It was SMCC's ability to rebound on the offensive end that led to 13 second-chance points. The Moose recorded the better shooting percentage, but SMCC managed 21 more attempts as a result of 22 turnovers by the opposition.

The Moose hung tough from the jump ahead 14-12 at the 8:45 mark in the first half. At this point, the home team strung together an 11-2 run to take the lead they would carry to the final whistle. Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) scored 13 of his 19 total in the first half, flushing three three-pointers.

In second half action, point guard Jacobee Burpee (Manchester, N.H.) dropped eight points in 11 minutes adding four rebounds and two assists to SMCC's 43-point half. Junior captain Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) finished with 16 points and nine boards, and senior captain Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) with 14 points and nine boards.

UMA's Israel Brown led his team with 19 points. Both Noah Thompson and Dustin Simpson-Bragg finished in double figures with 18 and 10.

SMCC improves to 21-5; UMA concludes its season at 5-23 overall.

The SeaWolves advance to match up with the #3 Knights from Vermont Technical College in the semifinal game on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Central Maine Community College in Auburn, Maine. WATCH.
