Men’s Basketball drops season opener at Thomas
WATERVILLE, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team went on the road to face the Terriers of Thomas College (NCAA Div. 3) in its season opener on Monday, Nov. 4.

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team went on the road to face the Terriers of Thomas College (NCAA Div. 3) in its season opener on Monday, Nov. 4.
The first half of the game saw the Terriers getting out in transition, scoring 19 fast break points to help give them a 9-point lead after 20 minutes of gameplay. The Seawolves would respond in the second half with a strong defensive presence and found their rhythm offensively, to bring their deficit to within one point of Thomas. The Terriers capitalized at the free throw line, shooting 77.7% in the final five minutes of the game, to secure a 72-66 victory over the Seawolves.
SMCC's Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) contributed a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) scored 17 points and added seven rebounds, and sophomore Julius Silva (Biddeford, Maine) netted 13 points, making three of nine three-point attempts. Freshman Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.) gave a spark off the bench to total nine points on 50 percent shooting.
Thomas' Shareff Jones would lead his team in points with 18, shooting 50 percent from the field. Forward Jackson Ruelke added 17 points and five rebounds.
SMCC begins its season at 0-1.
Next, the men will host the Bengals from University of Maine at Fort Kent (USCAA Div. 1) on Saturday, Nov. 9 in their home opener. Tip-off at the HUB Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
