SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to undefeated Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Thursday afternoon at the Wainwright Sports Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The visiting Mustangs stunned the home crowd with a goal just nine seconds into the match, as Mitch Cameron capitalized on a 50/50 ball that slotted itself in the net for a lightning-quick 1-0 lead.
CMCC extended the advantage in the 21st minute when a golden opportunity was presented to Matthew Greco who netted an unassisted goal, followed by Cameron's second strike of the match in the 29th minute—this one assisted by Albie Fozard-Oakes—to take a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime.
Despite an unlucky first half, just six minutes into the second half, freshman forward Jaxon Olsen (Gardiner, Maine) opened the SMCC account with a finish assisted by senior Louis Sehr (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire). Then in the 66th minute, sophomore Ignacio Ruiz Garcia (Zaragoza, Spain) volleyed in a rebounding shot to make it a one-goal match and pull SMCC within striking distance.
The Seawolves continued to press for an equalizer, producing 19 total shots and winning the corner kick battle 5-3. Late chances from Chandrel Laza (Westbrook, Maine), Cristo Vumpa (Portland, Maine), and Amisi Ngomu (Westbrook, Maine) forced key defensive stops from the Mustangs.
Despite the late flurry, SMCC couldn't find the back of the net again, falling just short in their comeback bid.
BETWEEN THE POSTS:
Sophomore Ethan Homa (Westbrook, Maine) played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Seawolves, making one save. His counterpart, CMCC's Cody Cleaveland, finished with nine saves on the day.
NEXT UP:
SMCC (3-1-1) will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 20, when they hit the road to face the Vermont State University Randolph. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
