Evenly Matched: Seawolves and Mustangs Draw 1-1
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s soccer played to a 1-1 draw against Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Monday afternoon at Wainwright, splitting points in a tightly contested Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Seawolves struck first in the 22nd minute when sophomore midfielder Ellie Schlichting (New Gloucester, Maine) found the back of the net off a perfect cross from first-year defender Alexis Kelsea (Auburn, Maine), giving SMCC a 1-0 lead that would carry into halftime.
Central Maine responded midway through the second half when midfielder Mikayla Martorano scored the equalizer in the 65th minute, chipping a shot that bounced off the crossbar - narrowly crossed the goal line to level the match 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but the goalkeepers held their ground. SMCC's Aubrey Gilbert (Farmingdale, Maine), made 12 saves in the match to help preserve the draw.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- SMCC outshot CMCC 19-20 overall, and 11-14 in shots on goal.
- Gilbert recorded 12 saves in 90 minutes for SMCC.
- Alexis Kelsea led the team with 4 shots and one assist.
- Ellie Schlichting scored her second goal of the season.
- CMCC received the only yellow card of the game in the 17th minute.

The Seawolves continue YSCC play on Wednesday, October 15, with a road matchup against NHTI. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
