SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Nicole Kane as the first Head Women’s Volleyball Coach in preparation for the program’s inaugural season fall 2020.
A Maine native, Kane brings coaching experience from all levels and most recently from the helm of the varsity program at South Portland High School. She led the Red Riots to four postseasons and one State Championship appearance in her five-year tenure—also named Class A Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2017. Prior, Kane spent one season at Boom Club Volleyball (Saco) and another as an assistant at Husson University.
Kane graduated from Yarmouth High School as both a basketball and volleyball standout. She continued her volleyball playing career at Emmanuel College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
Kane comments, “I’m very excited to begin working with SMCC and start the build of the women’s volleyball program. I plan to take advantage of the expanding volleyball talent in the state of Maine to jumpstart my recruiting efforts. While this will be a growing year for us, working hard on developing well-rounded players and utilizing their specialties will allow the coaching staff to see what hard work and dedication can produce. The goal is to create a competitive program, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead.”
Associate Dean of Students and Director of Athletics Matt Richards states, “We’re excited about Coach Kane taking on the program as we’ve reintroduced it here at the college. Her extensive background as a head high school coach along with her previous college coaching experience to include her knowledge base surrounding the club volleyball scene was very attractive to us in bringing Nicole on to lead our program.”
In addition to her duties at SMCC, Kane works as a Finance Analyst for Portland Public Schools and resides in Cumberland with her husband Joe.
