SMCC To Add Women's Volleyball Program For Fall 2020

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department is adding women’s volleyball to its slate of sports teams beginning in the fall of 2020.

SMCC will become the seventh school in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) to field a women’s volleyball team, joining Central Maine Community College, Great Bay Community College, NHTI, Paul Smith’s College, Unity College, and the University of Maine at Machias. The YSCC’s parent organization, the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), also sponsors women’s volleyball for national postseason opportunities and recognition.

SMCC will have ample opportunities to recruit players for the team because of the intense popularity of women’s volleyball at the high school level in Maine, said Matt Richards, SMCC Associate Dean of Students and Director of Athletics.

“We are excited about offering volleyball as an intercollegiate program within the Athletics Department,” Richards said. “The decision to bring on volleyball was done after a two-year evaluation period. We are confident that having a women’s volleyball team will enhance our Athletics Department with student-athletes who will be engaged participants in our athletics program while also being committed to academic success.”

SMCC currently has seven athletic programs: men’s and women’s basketball; men’s and women’s soccer; baseball; softball; and co-ed golf. The College offered women’s volleyball as a club sport in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, but has never had a varsity team.
