SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE – Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball dropped a tightly contested non-conference matchup against Bridgton Academy, 8-7, in a game shortened to seven innings due to darkness on Tuesday evening at Graves Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bridgton jumped ahead with a run in both the second and third innings, but the Seawolves answered in the bottom of the second when Samuel Potié (Gatineau, Quebec) singled and later scored on a hit-by-pitch from Tristan Laplante (Durham, Maine). Landon Sirois (Biddeford, Maine) added a sacrifice fly to give SMCC a 2-1 lead.
After the Wolverines tied it in the third, SMCC grabbed the edge again when Thomas Marcotte (Acushnet, Mass.) walked and came around on an error. The visitors broke through in the fifth, however, plating six runs on a mix of hits, free passes, and wild pitches to surge ahead 8-3.
The Seawolves mounted a late rally in the sixth. Bryce Wilcox (Strong, Maine) and Tristan Laplante reached to set the table before Alex Bartlett (Thomaston, Maine) delivered an RBI single. Mattias Cobham (Saint John, Canada) and Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) forced in runs with walks, and Marcotte added another RBI on a bases-loaded free pass. A wild pitch brought home the fourth run of the inning, pulling SMCC within one.
Despite putting the tying run aboard the bases in the seventh, Bridgton's bullpen held firm to secure the 8-7 final.
