OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team found itself in a tightly contested pitchers' duel on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to York County Community College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were locked in from the start, with neither side able to generate offense through the early innings as the game remained scoreless.
The Hawks broke through in the bottom of the third inning, using a leadoff single before delivering an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Seawolves had limited opportunities offensively but threatened in the fifth inning after reaching base on a pair of defensive errors. SMCC was unable to capitalize, as the Hawks escaped the inning without damage.
Another chance came in the eighth inning when Noah Gaghan (Brunswick, Maine) singled and advanced to third, but York County once again worked out of trouble to preserve the shutout.
SMCC made one final push in the ninth inning, putting runners on base, but a foul-out and fielder's choice ended the game, securing the narrow 1-0 victory for the Hawks.
