Late Flight: Hawks Push Past Seawolves

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE —Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball saw a late lead slip away in a 9-8 walk-off loss to York County Community College in the YSCC Quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
York County struck first in the second inning, using an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

After being held scoreless through the first three innings, SMCC took control in the fourth, plating five runs on five hits. Mitchel Violette (Westbrook, Maine) delivered the big swing with a two-run single, while Tyler Herkalo (Parkton, Md.) and Quinntin Gillies (Oshawa, Ontario) each contributed to the rally as the Seawolves jumped ahead 5-1.

York County chipped away with a run in the fourth while the sixth inning saw a shift. The Seawolves plated a run on a sacrifice bunt by Tristan Laplante (Durham, Maine) while the Hawks scored three runs to bring the game within one (6-5).

SMCC responded in the seventh, taking advantage of an error to give the Seawolves an 8-5 advantage heading into the bottom half of the seventh.

In the final frame, York County mounted one last push. A two-run double brought the game within one before a walk-off single to left scored two more to complete the comeback.
