Seawolves, Mustangs Split in Double Header
South Portland - In today's Yankee Small College Conference softball action conference rivals, SMCC and CMCC, battled in a double header. The two teams were evenly matched and each program came away with one win. The Lady Mustangs took game one by a score of 16-8, a deceptive final score after a numerous ties and lead changes in the first six innings of the contest. The Lady Seawolves took game two, which was called in five innings due to darkness, by a score of 8-5.

The Lady Mustangs took game one by a score of 16-8, a deceptive final score after a numerous ties and lead changes in the first six innings of the contest. The Lady Seawolves took game two, which was called in five innings due to darkness, by a score of 8-5.
In the top of the third inning with the score knotted 1-1, Mustangs first baseman Laura Soohey crushed a two run homer to put CMCC on top 3-1. The Seawolves answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to tie the game back up 3-3. The Mustangs brought in one run in the fourth to edge ahead of the SMCC but a three run homerun by Seawolves' shortstop Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, ME) put the Seawolves back on top 6-4. Entering the seventh inning the score was yet again deadlocked 8-8, but the Mustangs poured on the offense in the seventh inning racking up nine hits and putting eight runs on the scoreboard, overcoming the Seawolves 16-8. Freshman rightfielder Brittany Carver (Gardiner, ME) went three for four at the plate with one stolen base and two runs.
In game two, with daylight waning and temperatures dropping, the teams grinded out five hard fought innings. The Lady Mustangs chalked up two quick runs in the first inning but the Seawolves came fighting back with a double from leadoff batter Allard followed up by an RBI single from catcher Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME). First baseman Kathryn Gilio (Hampden, ME) also chalked up an RBI single driving in pitcher Charlotte Lewis (Chatham, NH). The Seawolves led 4-2 going into the third but Soohey once again drilled one over the fence pulling the Lady Mustangs to within one run. An RBI double by Trafton in the fourth widened the gap to two runs but the Mustangs were able to tie the game, 5-5, in the top of the fifth. With two runners on base and one out in the bottom of the fifth Seawolves second baseman Taylor Clapp (Richmond, ME) hit a two RBI double. Clapp proceeded to steal third and then got hit home by an RBI double from Allard. As Trafton stepped up to the plate the umps called the game due to darkness. Pitcher Charlotte Lewis pitched five innings with seven hits, five runs and five strikeouts.
After today's games the Seawolves are now 11-15 overall and 4-5 in conference play. The Seawolves will be back at it tomorrow for their third double header in three days as they take on CCRI at home at 3pm.
