SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball program eyes its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championship in five years returning its third-year skipper and two-time conference Coach of the Year Ray Magnant this 2019 spring season.
SMCC will carry a 3-3 fall record into a 24-game spring slate to begin Saturday, Mar. 16 in Boston with the Northeastern University Junior Varsity squad followed by four exhibitions against NCAA Division III Colby College and Husson University. The Lady SeaWolves remain on the road at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) for weekend action on Mar. 31 and then move on to Northern Essex Community College for a mid-week non-conference tilt.
SMCC will use the University of Maine club team to fine-tune before the start of conference scheduling on April 9 when Central Maine Community College (CMCC) visits South Portland. The Lady SeaWolves will duel the Lynx from NHTI—who received an at-large bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament a season ago—for a four game series split home and away Apr. 12-13.
The Wolves will host Northern Essex for two more prior to another four-game YSCC series, this time with the Herons from Great Bay Community College (GBCC) spanning Apr. 18 and Apr. 20. SMCC will finish conference play with another home date vs. CMCC on Apr. 23 before concluding the regular season with the always-talented club from CCRI in a matinee double-dip on Apr. 27.
Leary Field in Portsmouth, N.H. will be the host site of the 2019 YSCC Championships on Saturday, May 4. The one-day tournament will be presented by GBCC and the seeding of the four-team field will be determined upon the results of the 12-game conference regular season.
